Somatostatin

A polypeptide hormone produced in the HYPOTHALAMUS, and other tissues and organs. It inhibits the release of growth hormone (SOMATOTROPIN), and also modulates important physiological functions of the kidney, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract. Somatostatin receptors are widely expressed throughout the body. Somatostatin also acts as a neurotransmitter in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
